The Woodside Shale, TRw, is a unfossiliferous, highly fractured, red shale. Map Units It was probably deposited on a tidal flat that was periodically exposed to air.
Deposition of the Woodside Shale immediately follows a major extinction event that killed 90%-95% of all marine species about 250 million years ago.
Different marine life appears during depositon of the fossiliferous, shallow marine limestones of the Thaynes Formation, TRt, that overlays Woodside Shale. Map Units |
